A well functioning digestive system is halfway to happiness. Unfortunately many people suffer from constipation or irritable bowel syndrome. A healthy bowel would excrete stools every 12 hours after ingestion of a meal. That means a toilet visit for a number 2 twice or three times a day! If it is less than that it is not optimal if not dysfunctional.
The large intestine energetically and physically has to do with letting go. When we generate stress our sympathetic nervous system kicks in and energy goes more to the brain and extremities. When we relax our para-sympathetic nervous system kicks in and energy goes into the digestive and repairing systems of the body. You can imagine that if we overdo the stress factor it is going to have an affect on our digestion.
Other foods and habits that adversely affect digestion are: eating late and much, animal proteins, wheat, irregular timing. Things that might help to get things moving: Drinking a liter of water on waking, forms of meditation, fresh made veggie/fruit juice, MSM mixed with a supergreen like spirulina or chlorella.
Hope this helps,
Roland
